Name: George Hu (中文名:胡思源)
Title: Assistant to the Governor of New York State for Asian Affairs
Profile:
George was born into a prominent family in Shanghai, China, and is the third generation that came to the United States to seek higher education. His paternal grandfather was educated at Columbia University Teachers' College in 1921 and his father received his Masters from Harvard in 1941. George came to New York at 1979 and graduated from the Hunter College with a BA in Political Science, and in 1991, received Masters Degree in Urban Affairs.
As a student, he helped to draft a bill to legalize acupuncture in New York State and later it passed both the State Senate and the Assembly and finally became law after Governor Mario Cuomo signed it. After leaving school, George joined the work force in the private sector at various corporations such as the McGraw Hill, Inc.
Believe in public service, he joined the public sector at the New York City Department of Finance as a senior policy analyst in 1989 and later appointed to management positions. George is a certified New York City Translator for Chinese by the Mayor's Office. In 2000, representing the Finance Department, George coordinated the establishment of the "311" Citywide Citizen Service System. In May 2007, George was appointed as the Assistant to the Governor for Asian Community Affairs.
