Child Care
SUNY child care centers provide quality care for over 5,000 children at 55 centers across the state. Twenty of these centers are located on state-operated campuses, and thirty-three at the community colleges. The NYS Office of Children & Family Services licenses all centers and 62% of the centers are accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children. SUNY childcare centers promote the development of a trained workforce in New York State and contribute to economic development by providing employment opportunities for over 1,000 people.
SUNY childcare centers perform a vital service for the campus and community in providing care for children of students, faculty, staff and community members. Of the 5,000 children served, approximately one-third are children of student parents, one-third children of faculty and staff and one-third children from the community. Centers also provide sites for student interns and placements for work-study students. Collaboration with the campus community, local school districts, AmeriCorps, Foster Grandparents and other human service agencies provide a broad range of services for enrolled children and their families and creates a positive relationship with the community.
New York State provides funding for SUNY childcare centers through the Operating Grant and the Child Care & Development Block Grant. Operating grant funds are used for center operating costs, including salaries, fringe benefits, supplies, equipment and meals for children. The Child Care & Development Block Grant provides tuition subsidies for over 1,500 children of income-eligible students.
