In 1998, the Center for International Development (CID) of the State University of New York (SUNY) began an important relationship with the U.S. Embassy in Mexico City. This occurred under SUNY's five-year legislative strengthening program in Mexico, funded by the United States Association for International Development (USAID). Visits to Mexico by then-Chancellor Robert King and Ambassador Robert Gosende led to the development of a deepening relationship between SUNY's office in Mexico and the Embassy's Cultural Section. When USAID funding ceased in December 2003, SUNY's Office of International Programs (OIP) took over the operations of the Mexico office, dedicated to forging ties between SUNY and key Mexican universities and institutions.
