This event, under the slogan “People for Knowledge, Knowledge for People,” will take place from September 20 to December 8, 2007 in Parque Fundidora, Monterrey, Mexico. During 80 days, through different forms of expressions such as live activities, exhibits and dialogues, participants will talk about migration and identity. Complete presentation can be found at: http://www.suny.edu/InternationalPrograms/mex12.cfm?navLev=1&navLevel=1 4. SUNY’s role and objectives in Forum Faculty and students can participate in Forum University in several ways: Opportunities for faculty: * acting as dialogue advisers and/or presenters during the Forum; * team-teaching a course in fall 2007 as SUNY Forum University faculty; * organizing exhibits or student performances before or during Forum 2007.   Opportunities for students: * studying abroad in Monterrey through SUNY programs with campuses in Monterrey; * participating in internships during the semester abroad. This is an opportunity for a student to combine course credits with an internship during his/her study abroad semester. * taking a Forum University course or courses (team taught by SUNY Forum University Faculty and a partner from a Monterrey campus), including a one-week stay in Monterrey; * taking a Forum University course either face-to-face or using distance education methodology.   It is also important to mention that faculty and students are welcome to participate in Forum University as well as pre-Forum events. These may take place in Monterrey and NY. 5. Defining terms: > Pre-Forum Events: Events that are going to take place before September 20, 2007. Campuses should propose pre-Forum events such as live activities or exhibits to take place in Monterrey or NY. Forum organizers have set aside funds to enable participation in these pre-Forum events, but clearly the sooner a campus signals its desire to participate, the more likely it is that funding will be in place to support these activities. > Dialogue Advisor: For each dialog Forum organizers are seeking experts in the various fields touched upon by the themes to shape the discussion. These individuals will be culled from among respected, published scholars in their respective fields of research. Campuses should propose faculty to be Dialogue Advisors as appropriate. > Forum University: Created to work closely with Mexican universities to increase their relations with other Mexican and foreign institutions with the purpose to promote the participation of a large number of students during Fall 2007. This is a unique opportunity for students and faculty to interact and learn from the select group of experts who will attend each and any of the dialogues. > Forum University Faculty: Faculty from SUNY and from the Monterrey partner institution who team-teach a Forum course in any of the modalities. 6. Models of Collaboration for SUNY faculty and students > Introduction to SUNY’s Center for International On-line Collaborative Learning (CIOCL) located at Purchase College by Professor Jon Rubin, Director, CIOCL. The center will be launched on September 25, 2006. Jon enunciated one by one the list of questions that faculty should ask and answer when thinking about an on-line course. Then, he shared some of the projects elaborated by his students during a course team-taught in collaboration with one Turkish and one Mexican university. > Team Teaching Models document available at http://www.suny.edu/InternationalPrograms/, under Special Events in Mexico. > Available courses in Monterrey for international students: document available at http://www.suny.edu/InternationalPrograms/, under Special Events in Mexico. 7. Universidad de Monterrey (UDEM): http://www.udem.edu.mx/index.html 4. Universidad Regiomontana: http://www.ur.mx/ There are three existing SUNY-Monterrey Study Abroad Programs: 1. UDEM – Plattsburgh: 3 students participated in this program during the academic year 2003-2004 2. ITESM – UB: 6 students participated in this program during the academic year 2004-2005 3. ITESM – Oswego: 9 students participated in this program during the academic year 2004-2005 9. Funding > For Faculty Mobility: Arturo explained that in terms of the funding mechanism there are funds available for Dialogue Advisors, up to US$1.000. Hence a Dialogue Advisor is not obliged to team-teach a course. However, a Forum teacher does have to be a Dialogue Advisor in order to have access to some funding for trips and/or honorarium. In addition, Forum will pay for the first face-to-face meeting between SUNY Faculty and their partners in Monterrey. > For Student Mobility: Amb. Gosende mentioned OIP’s interest in seeking funding for student mobility with the understanding that campuses will do the same. Cost will be shared 50/50 with the possible exception of the community colleagues where system administration might contribute a greater share. Chancellor Ryan has shown enthusiasm about Forum Monterrey 2007, and support of SUNY’s participation. > Forum organizers are working on logistics such as housing, travel and arrival arrangement for 1.5 million people (estimated number of visitors) and 1,500 speakers. Hence, travel discounts for students and faculty can be expected. The cost of living for a week, including ticket, for students will be approx $650-$800. 10. Timing Leading to Forum – next steps > Spread the word, and identify SUNY faculty interested in participating as dialogue advisers or presenters, in team-teaching of a Forum University course and/or, in organizing an exhibit or performance. SUNY campuses will be working on this with the support of OIP. > Submission of Faculty Application Form: OIP proposed that faculty interested in teaching a Forum University Course submit a Faculty Application Form no later than August 15. It was suggested that August 15 was an early date not convenient for most campuses. Therefore, there was a unanimous decision that October 1, 2006 is the new deadline to submit applications. However, early submission is encouraged. The sooner a faculty submits his/her application, the sooner the matching process can start and the more likely it is that a partner will be found. > Identify a partner university in Monterrey: Arturo Cherbowski, based on the application form from the SUNY faculty, will be contacting any of the four universities in Monterrey. Three things are essential in this matching process: clear interest from SUNY faculty, clear relationship between the proposed course and any of the dialogues, clear interest from a Monterrey faculty. > Promotion: o During SUNY study abroad fairs UB, Oswego and Plattsburgh will promote their study abroad programs in Monterrey, especially for Fall 2007. A representative from Forum or OIP may participate in some of these fairs. o Arturo Cherbowski will send some promotional material about Forum to be distributed at the SUNY Study Abroad fairs.
