One of the goals of the SUNY Center on Russia and the United States is to promote collaborative research and other forms of academic interaction between Russian and SUNY scholars. Toward that end the Center works with Russian scholars to organize joint conferences on selected themes that bring Russian, SUNY and other scholars together for sustained intellectual dialogue.

The Center on Russia and the United States was a partner in planning several international conferences that took place in Moscow in 2005:

Information Security
A joint Moscow State University-SUNY Committee on Information Security is being formed to explore ways that SUNY and Moscow State University specialists in information security might collaborate. This project is a follow up to the jointly run conference on information security that was held in Moscow in October 2004. A second conference at Moscow State University was held November 1 and 2, 2005.

US-Russian Exchanges Symposium - May 26-27, 2005
In May 2005 the US Embassy in Moscow held its second US-Russia Symposium on Academic Relations. The State University's Center on Russia and the US were highlighted in a session titled "Case Studies." Dr. John Ryder, SUNY Center on Russia and the United States, and Dr. John Rohrbaugh, University at Albany, represented The State University of New York. Dr. Ryder participated in a panel titled "What US Universities Expect from Russian Partners." Five hundred representatives of American and Russian universities and academic organizations were registered for the symposium.

A SUNY-Moscow State University panel was invited to make a presentation on our collaboration, specifically the forms of cooperation it enables and the factors that make it one of the longest standing, broadest, and most successful collaborative relationship between a US and a Russian university. Dr. Ryder also participated in a session on US expectations of Russian partner universities.

Symposium on US-Russian Academic Relations - March 2004
In March 2004 the US Embassy sponsored the first symposium in Moscow that brought together leading participants in Russian-American academic activities. SUNY and Moscow State University, through the Center on Russia and the US, were prominent participants in the symposium. In fact, it was clear from the planning and implementation stages of the event that the Center is the leading force in Russian-American academic collaboration in the sense that no other single Russian or American university is as active as are Moscow State University and the State University of New York. The Center, at the request of the Embassy, will continue to play a central role in the ongoing development of Russian-American academic relationships.
