Opportunities for SUNY Faculty and Students

The Arab Republic of Egypt is one of the newest countries to recognize the advantages of professional cooperation and collaboration between The State University of New York (SUNY) and Egyptian higher education institutions. Egypt is a leader in the Arab world in many fields, including education. Therefore, professional ties and exchanges benefit not only Egyptian and American counterparts but also academic communities in other countries of the region. Egypt has undertaken an ambitious plan to overhaul its entire educational system, including schools, universities and teacher training institutions. There is high and growing interest among Egyptian scholars and students to pursue research and studies, and to foster academic partnerships with universities in the United States. SUNY campuses are desirable partners to meet the needs of the Egyptian academic community.

Initial discussions on possible cooperation were held at the beginning of 2005 in Egypt, and a return visit of delegates from a leading Egyptian university took place in August 2005. More visits and discussions are foreseen in the coming months with the objective of launching the academic partnership in 2006.

Looking ahead to development of professional collaboration between the Egyptian academic community and SUNY campuses, the following programs and initiatives are under consideration:

  • Semester Abroad (exchange of students)
  • Summer Semester (exchange of students)
  • Visiting Professors and Researchers
  • Junior Faculty Development
  • Dual Diploma
  • Conferences
  • Special Events and Activities
  • Resources
