State Relations Update - March 12, 2010
March 12, 2010
Senator Klein Hearing - Yesterday, the Senate Task Force on Government Efficiency, chaired by State Senator and Deputy Majority Leader Jeff Klein, heard testimony presented by SUNY's Chief Operating Officer and Senior Vice Chancellor Monica Rimai (testimony attached). The hearing was an outgrowth of Senator Klein's December 2009 report on "Finding Ways to Curb Costs in the State University of New York" (attached). Central to this discussion is the proposal to centralize the police operations at SUNY's state operated campuses. We expect much more attention on this topic as the legislative session progresses.
President's Meeting - On Tuesday, March 9th, over 40 SUNY campus presidents and Chancellor Zimpher participated in the 2010 version of SUNY Day. The presidents had the opportunity of meeting with the Senate Majority Upstate Caucus and were also engaged with individual discussions with Senator Toby Stavisky, Assemblymember Deborah Glick, Majority Leader Assemblyman Ron Canestrari and Assembly Minority Leader Brian Kolb. By and large this format was welcomed by the legislative participants as a means of delivering the SUNY message in a consistent and concise manner.
SUNY Legislative Alumni Caucus - On Wednesday, March 10th, over 25 members of the Senate and Assembly who are SUNY alumni met with Chancellor Zimpher to discuss the Public Higher Education Empowerment and Innovation Act. A lively discussion ensued resulting in a renewed commitment by many in attendance to continue to advocate for PHEEIA within their respective legislative caucus.
