"Spent Hens" Agriculture College We propose development of an economical and sound spent hen disposal system for the egg industry, ideally resulting in the development of a spent hen product that would have a sound economic value and which would find economic acceptance in the feed industry. "Sheep Digestion of TNT" Veterinary College Much work has been done to find cost effective ways to remediate the highly toxic and persistent explosive TNT from contaminated soils and groundwater. We have proposed a new method for bioremediation of TNT, namely that certain plants and grasses on contaminated sites, as they grow, accumulate TNT into their blades after which sheep graze these plants and remediate TNT internally. Questions have been asked about the toxicity of TNT to sheep. Here we report on a study conducted to measure the absorption, disposition, metabolism, and excretion of TNT in sheep after dietary exposure. "Keep our Complicated Science Program Running" Department of Statistics, College of Science This program, previously funded by The United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA), develops survey design and analysis methodology appropriate for large-scale aquatic monitoring programs. We had a four-year grant, which expired this year. We are looking for an appropriation to continue doing the work we have done under this grant. Some current research areas include: small area estimation applied to surveys of lakes, streams, and estuaries, estimation of status and trend in condition using complex surveys over time; development of new survey design methods to assess ecological condition that incorporate remote sensing and other sources of auxiliary information; development of procedures to account for missing data in probability surveys; estimating total number of species within a region based on probability survey data. "We'll do Anything" Generic College Request We have no money for this program as of yet, but we've had a great idea-we want to create a new teacher institute to complement the work we are already doing to educate futures teachers. If we can't money for this new program, we would like funds to improve our chemistry labs, which are in desperate need of repair. "Over the Top" and/or Competitive Program Exists Generic College Request $10 million to establish a statewide research platform for discovering and understanding the impacts of climate change, land-use change, and invasive species on ecology. We will gather long-term data on ecological responses of the biosphere to changes in land use and climate, and on feedbacks with the geosphere, hydrosphere, and atmosphere. It will consist of distributed sensor networks and experiments, linked by advanced cyberinfrastructure to record and archive ecological data for at least 30 years.
