January 2013 Charter Schools Stimulus Fund Grant Project Summaries Hebrew Language Academy Charter School $200,000.00 District: NYC Community School District (“CSD”) 22 Authorizer: NYC Schools Chancellor Average Score: 85.000 The school seeks a grant to cover the costs associated with (1) the engagement of an advisor to provide, oversight, coordination and reporting to the school board and leadership in the development of leasehold improvements and (2) a portion of the leasehold improvements, namely, the purchase of building materials that would be installed during the grant period. Brighter Choice Charter School for Girls $191,500.00 District: Albany City Authorizer: Board of Regents Average Score: 84.667 The school requests a grant to fund the costs of building renovation and repairs including the reconfiguration of the kitchen for improved food service and increased service capacity. Academy of the City Charter School $200,000.00 District: NYC CSD 30 Authorizer: SUNY Average Score: 81.333 The school would use grant funds to support needed capital improvements and renovations to the school’s permanent new facility, which are designed to meet necessary building and safety codes. VOICE Charter School of New York $200,000.00 District: NYC CSD 30 Authorizer: NYC Schools Chancellor Average Score: 81.333 The school requests a grant to bring its facility into compliance with building safety and occupancy codes, to facilitate safe student access to the playground and to fund the final steps of a boiler replacement project. University Preparatory Charter School for Young Men $200,000.00 District: Rochester City Authorizer: SUNY Average Score: 81.000 The school would use the grant as a down payment to purchase a new facility, and, therefore, purchase the building without long-term debt. The building would be renovated, and when complete, would provide the school a campus that will accommodate 450 students in grades 7 – 12. Brooklyn Urban Garden Charter School $149,000.00 District: NYC CSD 15 Authorizer: Board of Regents Average Score: 79.667 The grant would allow the school to renovate and customize its building including repair of the roof, electrical and wiring upgrades to support technology infusion, and improvement and customization of classrooms, offices and hallways. Genesee Community Charter School $200,000.00 District: Rochester City Authorizer: Board of Regents Average Score: 77.667 The school would use grant proceeds to build a music room, visual arts room, dance studio and space for physical expedition. A portion of the grant money would also be used to add space to an undersized primary classroom and a teacher resource room. West Buffalo Charter School $130,903.00 District: Buffalo City Authorizer: Board of Regents Average Score: 77.000 The grant funds would cover costs related to the installation of a new kitchen hood, cooling unit, and telecommunications and security systems. The school would also embark on various facilities projects including sound baffling in the multi-purpose room, equipping the playground, and renovating the 4th floor to accommodate a grade expansion. East Harlem Scholars Academy Charter School $200,000.00 District: NYC CSD 4 Authorizer: SUNY Average Score: 77.000 The grant would support pre-development projects for a new 75,000 square foot facility. Grant funds would underwrite the fees for Civic Builders, a non-profit real estate developer, as well as pay soft costs and services including an architectural feasibility study, environmental and geotechnical site investigations, and site survey. Brighter Choice Charter School for Boys $200,000.00 District: Albany City Authorizer: Board of Regents Average Score: 76.667 The school would utilize the grant to transform a current office space into a specially designed school library media center, and improve the current facility food service space. New York City Montessori Charter School $195,750.00 District: NYC CSD 7 Authorizer: Board of Regents Average Score: 76.667 The school would use the grant to finance leasehold improvements to complete the build-out of its new permanent, leased private facility. The improvements would include the conversion of the staff room into a classroom, the addition of a staff room and a kitchen, and necessary safety improvements for the gym and playground. New Hope Academy Charter School $200,000.00 District: NYC CSD 18 Authorizer: SUNY Average Score: 76.333 The grant would fund a renovation project that includes the addition of two classrooms, one multi-purpose room, and a library, all of which would be ready by September 2013. The building would accommodate the school’s maximum projected enrollment of 364 students. Central Queens Academy Charter School $200,000.00 District: NYC CSD 24 Authorizer: SUNY Average Score: 74.000 The school would use the grant funds as a security deposit for the acquisition or lease of a permanent facility in 2015 and pay for professional services to conduct due diligence. Tech International Charter School $200,000.00 District: NYC CSD 10 Authorizer: SUNY Average Score: 73.333 The school would use the grant funds to build a gallery space for student and parent gatherings, a science laboratory to support high quality STEM instruction and a nurse’s office to provide health services. Syracuse Academy of Science Charter School $200,000.00 District: Syracuse City Authorizer: Board of Regents Average Score: 72.333 The school would use the grant to replace all its existing single-paned, mostly colored, polypropylene windows in its building with double-paned Energy STAR clear glass windows to increase day light in classrooms, reduce outside noise and save heating and electric costs. Broome Street Academy Charter High School $100,000.00 District: NYC CSD 2 Authorizer: SUNY Average Score: 71.667 The school would renovate the 5th floor of its leased facility to accommodate its 3rd incoming class for the 2013-2014 school year. When fully renovated, the 5th floor would have three additional science classrooms, a special education support services classroom, a prep room for science teachers, two administrative offices, and student bathrooms. Amani Public Charter School $67,307.00 District: Mount Vernon Authorizer: Board of Regents Average Score: 69.667 The grant would pay for part of the costs associated with pre-construction activities that are precursors to the leasing and renovation of the school’s permanent home. The school would use the grant to pay for soft costs associated with preparing the site for construction scheduled for 2013, and for occupancy in August 2014. Bedford Stuyvesant New Beginnings Charter School $67,307.00 District: NYC CSD 16 Authorizer: NYC Schools Chancellor Average Score: 69.667 The school would use the grant proceeds to pay for remodeling and expansion of its long-term leased space. By upgrading, improving and outfitting an additional 20,000 square feet for its existing elementary and middle school building, the school would be able to accommodate its entire 650 student community at scale. DREAM Charter School $67,307.00 District: NYC CSD 4 Authorizer: NYC Schools Chancellor Average Score: 69.667 The grant would support the construction of the school’s new facility, which would provide larger than average classrooms for co-teaching teams, specially designed science, art and music rooms, gym and fitness space, and a dedicated space for family engagement activities.
