Minutes of a Meeting of the Research and Economic Development Committee of the Board of Trustees of the State University of New York held May 9, 2011 Pursuant to notice of meeting duly given on April 28, 2011 the Research and Economic Development Committee of the Board of Trustees of the State University of New York, met at Hudson Valley Community College in Troy, NY on May 9, 2011. Members present: Trustees Ehrenberg, Lichtman, and Mr. Staller Members absent: Trustees Sanford and Belluck Also present: Mr. O’Connor, Mr. Howard, Dr. Krentsel, Dr. Sammakia, Mr. Boyce, Mr. Fancher, Ms. Bernstein and Ms. Boice In the absence of Trustee Sanford, Trustee Ehrenberg served as Chair of the Research and Economic Development Committee meeting which was called to order at 3:00 pm. Trustee Ehrenberg called for a motion to approve the proposed minutes of the Committee’s meeting held March 21, 2011. Upon motion of Trustee Lichtman, seconded by Trustee Staller, the proposed minutes were unanimously approved as the official minutes of the meeting held March 21, 2011. Mr. O’Connor introduced Jeffrey Boyce, Research Foundation Project Manager, and stated that he will provide an update on the Find a SUNY Scholar program. Mr. Boyce provided a demonstration on how to search the COS Funding Opportunities database and the COS Scholar Universe database. He explained that the Funding Opportunities database is the most comprehensive source of funding available on the Web and the Scholar Universe database is a massive database that contains the profiles of 2 million active full-time faculty and is searchable by discipline. All SUNY campuses, including community colleges, now have access to the COS suite of tools through a SUNY-wide license negotiated by the RF. Faculty and staff can use these tools to collaborate, grow research and advance commercialization in direct support of SUNY and the Entrepreneurial Century, one of the SUNY Strategic Plan Six Big Ideas. After a lengthy discussion, the Committee members provided positive comments and requested access to the database. Mr. O’Connor introduced Michael Fancher, Vice President for Business Development & Economic Outreach, College of Nanoscale Science & Engineering University at Albany. Mr. Fancher provided a presentation regarding nanotechnology and explained the model used at the College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering at the University at Albany (CNSE). He also gave a description of CNSE’s recent expansion and partnership with Smart System Technology Commercialization Center. Ms. Boice reported on the Research Foundation’s event at the New York Academy of Sciences. She stated that 15 different entrepreneurship projects across New York State will be recognized on May 26, 2011 and the Trustees were invited to attend.
