STATE UNIVERSITY OF NEW YORK Minutes of Meeting of the Research and Economic Development Committee March 21, 2011 (Subject-to-Correction) The Research and Economic Development Committee of the Board of Trustees of State University of New York met on March 21, 2011 at 3:00 p.m. in University Union Hall Building, Room 102, Binghamton University, Vestal, New York pursuant to calls sent by the Office of the Secretary of the University on February 22, 2011. March 21, 2011 3:00 p.m. Committee Members present: Ms. Sanford, Chair; Mr. Belluck; Dr. Ehrenberg; Dr. Lichtman; Mr. Staller Other Trustees present: Mr. Hayden Also present: Mr. O’Connor; Dr. Krentsel; Dr. Sammakia; Mr. Boyce 1. APPROVAL OF COMMITTEE MINUTES Ms. Sanford called for a motion to approve the proposed minutes of the Committee’s meeting held January 10, 2011. Upon motion of Dr. Ehrenberg, seconded by Mr. Staller, the proposed minutes were unanimously approved as the official minutes of the meeting held January 10, 2011. 2. COMMITTEE BUSINESS Mr. O’Connor introduced Dr. Bahgat Sammakia, Director of Center for Excellence and Interim Vice President for Research at Binghamton University. Dr. Sammakia also serves on the Research Foundation Board of Directors. Dr. Sammakia thanked the Trustees for coming to Binghamton University for their meeting and stated that his co-presenter is Dr. Eugene Krenstal, Vice President for Entrepreneurship and Innovation Partnership. Drs. Sammakia and Krenstal provided an overview about the research that is conducted on campus, their efforts and entrepreneurship and innovation. They also discussed a new initiative, which is a not-for-profit center that Binghamton University is co-forming with industry to raise additional funds for research. The Committee discussed this topic at length and Ms. Sanford thanked Drs. Sammakia and Krenstal for their presentation and stated the Trustees are very impressed with their work. Mr. Jeffrey Boyce, Research Foundation Project Manager, provided a presentation regarding the “Find a SUNY Scholar” initiative. Mr. Boyce stated that this is a web-based database with over 29,000 SUNY faculty expertises which may be accessed from any SUNY campus web site or the Research Foundation’s website. RF President John O’Connor presented the Foundation’s Quarterly Report. He pointed out that the RF has increased the number of licenses as well as licensing revenue. Mr. O’Connor reported that the RF is moving successfully moving forward with the incubator at Fredonia that is now completely filled. He also stated that a very strong partnership has been launched between SUNY, the Research Foundation, and New York Academy of Sciences. 3.
