Zimpher, Chancellor Subject: Commendation of 40th Anniversary of the Founding of the State University of New York College of Optometry Action Requested The proposed resolution commends the 40th anniversary of the founding of the State University of New York College of Optometry. Resolution I recommend that the Board of Trustees adopt the following resolution: Whereas April 14, 2011 marked the 40th anniversary of the founding of the State University of New York College of Optometry, under the leadership of then Chancellor and future United States Commissioner of Education Ernest L. Boyer, and Whereas the College begins the celebration of 40 years of leadership in patient care, education and research as it embarks on fulfilling its strategic plan for the future, A Shared Vision and, Whereas the College, through its patient care facility the University Eye Center provides approximately 75,000 patient encounters each year, offering the highest quality eye and vision care and, Whereas the College receives 758 applications for 76 student seats, placing it among the most competitive schools of optometry in the country and, Whereas the College’s Graduate Center for Vision Research is a founding member of the SUNY Eye Institute, with more than half of its faculty members funded by the prestigious National Eye Institute of the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation, and Whereas the College not only leads in the community and collaboratively works with other SUNY campuses, but also extends the global reach of SUNY through patient care and student exchange partnerships in China and other international locations, now, therefore, be it Resolved the State University of New York supports and encourages the College of Optometry as it looks to the future, representing the continuity, growth and leadership reflecting the highest ideals of The Power of SUNY, and be it further Resolved the SUNY Board of Trustees congratulates the College of Optometry on its remarkable history of innovation in patient care, education and research as the College embarks on its anniversary celebration.
