SUBJECT:	Naming of the Garry S. Sklar, MD Professorship in Anesthesiology – University Hospital Medical Center at Brooklyn


Action Requested

      The proposed resolution approves the action of the SUNY Council of Downstate Medical Center in May 2012in naming a professorship  at the University Hospital Medical Center at Brooklyn the “Garry S. Sklar, MD Professorship in Anesthesiology.”

Resolution

      I recommend that the Board of Trustees adopt the following resolution:

Resolved that the action of the SUNY Council of Downstate Medical Center in naming a professorship at the University Hospital Medical Center at Brooklyn the “Garry S. Sklar, MD Professorship in Anesthesiology” be, and hereby is, approved.

Background

      The proposed resolution approves the action of the SUNY Council of Downstate Medical Center in naming a professorship  at the University Hospital Medical Center at Brooklyn the “Garry S. Sklar, MD Professorship in  Anesthesiology.” The Downstate Council’s action was taken in recognition of a $1,000,000 gift from the estate of Herman and Olive Pascarella, longtime friends of the Sklar family. Dr. Sklar was on the Downstate faculty in the anesthesiology department from 1974-78. As an attending anesthesiologist at both Downstate Medical Center and Kings County Hospital at that time, Dr. Sklar published several important papers. Thereafter, he held leadership positions at other hospitals. Dr. Sklar is now retired.
