Communications and External Affairs Committee Minutes May 9, 2011 10:30 a.m. Attending: Spielvogel, McCall, O’Brien, Gondar, Belluck, Lewin, Ehrehnberg, Morgan Hook, David Belsky, Stacey Hengsterman, John O’Connor, Aimee Bernstein Motion to pass minutes from 3/21 Motioned By: Trustee Lewin Second by: Trustee O’Brien Resolutions: Two resolutions: 40th Anniversary of the Founding of the College of Optometry; 175th Anniversary of the College at Brockport JJO – discussion regarding campus celebrations NZ – discussed inaugural events and anniversaries as being important Speilvogel – discussed Optometry – placed a strong roll in school treating the citizens suggests Morgan work on getting word out on this celebration and its importance to the community O’Brien – re: 17th Brockport Anniversary – friendly amendment (wording) - Speilvogel – motion, McCall seconded Belsky: update on status: Facebook Twitter You Tube Lewin: requested a chart on monthly basis Belsky – SUNY Advocate update Update homepage Update Internship McCall discussion on news reports about SUNY and Lobbying expenses Hook – newclips service – will add Trustees – at next meeting it will be discussed whether continued or do another way JJO – Use this committee to get morning clips – in June put on agenda to review Discussion regarding Lobbyists SUNY hire in addition to Government Relations staff in place to lobby on behalf of SUNY SH – 8-12 campuses hire own lobbyist to lobby on specific issues, ie.. Purchase Land Lease bill Government relations works on bigger issues – rational tuition, use government relations reps from campuses Speilvogel: Lobbyist report to go to committee prior to next BOT meeting – who, how much they spend, what purposes they use McCall – Government Relations office in executive session JJO – National Affairs – Federal Relations update – RF and what we do in DC - $ on legislative side; $ on grants for research side Lewin – org chart of offices Aimee: National Affairs update - Biweekly conference calls w/Research Centers - Office in DC – Liz moved on; Andrew Alix maintaining office - He just finished quarterly Lobbying report - Aimee, Stony Brook and Binghamton visited members of NYS Congressional delegation regarding Patent reform - Congress 2012 Budget - Pell Grant update O’Brien – Chancellor and teacher education – similar group to DC –as w/Stony Brook & Binghamton on Patent reform Lewin – what are you working on State and Federal – report of some type Stacey Hengsterman – Government Relations Update - Big items – rational tuition plan – top priority - Intro of Assemblymember Crystal Peoples-Stokes and Senator Sewards bill regarding rational tuition plan - LaValle report out of committee - Glick – supports idea but has some concerns, how high cap and TAP - President Hefner – Tap Brochure discussion - NYSUNY2020 update - No word on Summit - Talking point card – tomorrow - Memo of support Discussion on memo of support – regarding paragraph on lowest tuition in the country…Morgan Hook – size & affordability – message consistency, repeat it over and over again - Assembly – get out of Higher Education Committee and Senate out of Finance Committee – very important - May 2nd NYS2020 – opportunity for U Centers to develop a long term economic development plan which reviewed by Chancellor, forwarded to Economic Development Council outlining their plans for ….. Belluck – discussion about need to be informed and not after the fact Gondar – back door differential plan – SA did not approve setting different tuitions at different campuses.
