M E M O R A N D U M August 1, 2012 TO: Members of the Board of Trustees FROM: Nancy L. Zimpher, Chancellor SUBJECT: Appointment of Dr. John F. Williams as President of Downstate Medical Center Action Requested The proposed resolution appoints Dr. John F. Williams as President of Downstate Medical Center. Resolution I recommend that the Board of Trustees adopt the following resolution: Resolved that the appointment of Dr. John F. Williams as President of Downstate Medical Center, at an annual State salary of $350,000, and annual compensation from other sources in the amount of $300,000, for a term commencing on or about August 20, 2012 and ending August 20, 2014, be and hereby is, approved. Dr. Williams will also be eligible during this term for two merit pay bonuses, up to $25,000 each, after the conclusion of nine and eighteen months of service respectively, with amounts to be awarded in the discretion of the Chancellor, pursuant to goals and objectives that will be discussed and mutually agreed with him in advance of each period, which will be payable from non-State funds. Downstate Medical Center will also provide Dr. Williams with temporary housing directly, or will pay Dr. William’s actual and reasonable housing costs, not to exceed $80,000 annually, and will provide Dr. Williams use of a campus vehicle as needed. Background I am pleased to recommend the appointment of Dr. John F. Williams as President of Downstate Medical Center, for a term commencing on or about August 20, 2012 and ending on or about August 20, 2014. Dr. Williams will relieve Dr. Ian Taylor of the additional role of Officer-in-Charge that he has assumed since the resignation of Dr. John LaRosa in June 2012. Dr. Williams presently serves as Senior Vice President of Verras Health Care International. Dr. William’s has served in various capacities at George Washington University and its medical center, as follows: Senior Vice Provost and Vice President for Health Affairs, The George Washington University Medical Center (June 2010--January 2011) Vice President for Health Affairs and Bloedorn Professor of Administrative Medicine, The George Washington University Medical Center (November 1997--December 2011) University Provost and Vice President for Health Affairs, The George Washington University (January 2003--July 2010) Dean, School of Medicine and Health Sciences, The George Washington University (August 1999--June 2003). Dr. Williams earned a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science at Boston University in 1970, a Master of Science at The London School of Economics and Political Science in 1973, a Master of Public Health from Yale University in 1975, and Doctorates of Medicine (1979) and Education (1996) from The George Washington University.
