M E M O R A N D U M September 12, 2012 To: Members of the Board of Trustees From: Nancy L. Zimpher, Chancellor Subject: Acquisition of Property - State University of New York at Albany Action Requested The proposed resolution authorizes the acquisition of property for the State University of New York at Albany. Resolution I recommend that the Board of Trustees adopt the following resolution: Whereas it is necessary for the purposes of the State University of New York at Albany to acquire the real property hereinafter described, together with all improvements thereon; now, therefore, be it Resolved that the approximately 2.69+ acre parcel of real property, together with all improvements thereon, situated at 141 Western Avenue in the City of Albany, County of Albany, New York, formerly the Albany City School District’s Philip Schuyler Elementary School, the approximate location of which is indicated on the map attached hereto, be purchased for the sum not to exceed $2,000,000.00, as established by a proper appraisal and an accurate survey, and approval of title to said real property by the Attorney General; and, be it further Resolved that the Chancellor, or designee, be, and hereby is, authorized to execute any and all documents, notices, maps, or any other instruments necessary or appropriate to effect the acquisition of title to and possession of such property. Background State University of New York at Albany requires this land and building, which is the former Phillip Schuyler Elementary School, to allow it to address a significant space shortfall for the delivery of academic programs as identified in the recently completed Facilities Master Plan. Moreover, the building will provide surge space to enable the University to implement a multi-year renovation plan of other aging parts of the Uptown and Downtown campuses. The acquisition of the Schuyler School is a unique and strategic opportunity for the University. The Schuyler School shares a contiguous boundary with the University, sitting less than 15 feet away from the closest building on the University’s Downtown Campus, and constructed during the same period, many mistake it for being part of the SUNY campus. Acquisition of this property will not only address the University’s immediate academic program and capital space needs, but will also provide a contiguous, attractive, and revitalized city block in the downtown section of the City of Albany.
