Zimpher, Chancellor Subject: One Hundred Fiftieth Anniversary of SUNY Oswego Action Requested The proposed resolution honors the State University of New York College at Oswego on its one hundred fiftieth anniversary. Resolution I recommend that the Board of Trustees adopt the following resolution: Whereas the institution now known as SUNY Oswego has been a national and international leader in education, innovation and solutions since its founding 150 years ago; and Whereas Edward Austin Sheldon founded its forerunner, the Oswego Primary Teachers' Training School, in 1861 with a goal of improving education and the lives of residents of the then expanding United States; and Whereas Sheldon's innovative Oswego Method -- blending object teaching within classroom training -- spread as graduates taught and assumed leadership posts at other normal schools in the State (including future SUNY colleges), in every state in the country and as far as Brazil, Japan and the Philippines; and Whereas Oswego was a founding member of the State University of New York in 1948; and Whereas Oswego today is a stunning 700 acre residential campus with 58 buildings that support learning in an unparalleled setting on the shores of the beautiful Lake Ontario; and Whereas Oswego - a public institution of higher education offering 4-year comprehensive academic and academic undergraduate opportunities in the Syracuse /Central New York region - has continued to stress educational leadership, outstanding teaching and scholarship, and solving problems; and Whereas Oswego offers students more than 100 distinctive and nationally accredited academic programs through its College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, School of Education, School of Business and School of Communications, Media and the Arts; and Whereas Oswego faculty members are inspired teachers and engaging and dedicated mentors; and Whereas Oswego connects learners with the wider world through such opportunities as its Global Laboratory and study abroad placements on all 7 continents; and Whereas SUNY Oswego is the largest employer in Oswego County, hosting a workforce of 1600 faculty and staff and 2,375 students employees and annually providing a $430 million economic impact in New York State, with $370 million in its seven-county region; and Whereas SUNY Oswego has achieved the Carnegie Community Engagement Classification and has been named to the U.S. President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll every year since its inception, having over 100 community partners and 20 community service programs and providing thousands of hours of community service and volunteer assistance every year; and Whereas Oswego currently has 48,000 alumni living in New York State and 75,000 alumni overall, living and working across the nation and also worldwide; and Whereas Oswego’s multifaceted contributions ranging from its community to the world embody the spirit of the Power of SUNY; now, therefore, be it Resolved that the SUNY Board of Trustees hereby congratulates SUNY Oswego, its students, its faculty and staff, its alumni and its extended family for 150 years of excellence in education and efforts to improve our world.
